The Technical Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Frederick Amissah, has defended the government's record on cocoa, insisting that the welfare of farmers remains a priority. Amissah argued that the administration of President John Mahama has implemented measures that continue to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers. He dismissed claims that Ghana is lagging behind neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire in terms of cocoa pricing, stressing that farmers in Ghana are equally benefitting from government policies.
These claims come in response to rising tensions within the cocoa farming industry. Cocoa farmers have been protesting across the country, demanding higher wages and better incentives. According to the Ghana National Association of Cocoa Farmers, their grievances remain unresolved, despite a recent meeting with the Minister of Food and Agriculture.
Speaking on JoyNews Newsfile on Saturday, August 23, Mr. Amissah assured the public that the government is doing everything possible to ensure that the cocoa industry thrives. He stated, "We are not doing badly when it comes to the welfare of the cocoa farmer."
These comments ignited a fiery response from the opposition party, who accused the government of neglecting the needs of their farmers and failing to provide the necessary support for the cocoa industry to flourish.
