Hyderabad has been left shaken after a tragic incident on Wednesday where a 14-year-old boy allegedly killed his 10-year-old female neighbour over a stolen cricket bat.

The boy, who has been arrested, admitted to the police that he planned and committed the murder as the girl had stolen his cricket bat worth INR 8000 two months ago, and he had planned to kill her ever since.

The girl's family lived in the adjacent house to the boy's in Risala Bazar in Hyderabad. The police said the girl had stolen the cricket bat to play with her friends, not realizing the consequences that would follow.

The boy waited for her outside her house after school on Wednesday afternoon and demanded his bat back. When the girl said she didn't have it, the boy didn't believe her and got into an altercation with her. He choked her and banged her head against a wall, which led to her death.

The boy's father, who is a carpenter, has not lodged a police complaint about the stolen bat till now. The boy was produced in a juvenile court and will be sent to a remand home for further investigation.

The case has led to concerns about peer rivalry and juvenile crime, with police urging parents to actively intervene in their children's relationships with their peers before it's too late.

Only a catastrophic disregard for human life, culminating in a horrific ending, could have resulted from this tragic incident.

The girl, who dreamed of being a doctor, is remembered by her family and friends as a vibrant, loving child.
