Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that he will launch a "world record-level" healthcare campaign for women and children on September 17, which is also observed as the International Childcare Day.
Addressing the Lok Sabha during the penultimate session of the Lower House before the monsoon session ends on August 13, Modi said the "Grama Swaraj" or Village Self-governance initiative would be a step towards creating a record in the world.
He said the scheme, which will be launched in the birth anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi, will try to focus on grassroots transformation and development of villages.
The scheme, which will be launched in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, will also serve as a tool to strengthen BJP's hold in the rural areas.
The BJP-ruled states, including Haryana, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Delhi, are set to organise a series of activities as part of the campaign, including blood-donation camps and inauguration of new hospital blocks.
Modi also urged the MPs to provide full support to the campaign and to ensure maximum people's participation for the event.
The prime minister also expressed gratitude to the states ruled by the BJP and its allies for their support and cooperation in the vaccination drive.
He claimed that the country has vaccinated the fastest growing population in the world and has vaccinated over 86% of the eligible population with the first dose and around 55% of the eligible population with both doses.
He also informed the House that since the launch of the PM Awas Yojana, more than two crore houses have been constructed, out of which more than 1.5 crore houses have been provided to the beneficiaries.
Modi said during the pandemic, the Centre distributed free food grains to over 80 crore people under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, providing much-needed support to vulnerable families.
He added that free food grains were being provided to more than 80 crore people, which is around 45% of the country's population, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY).
The assistance has been provided over and above the subsidy given to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act.
He further added that subsidy worth Rs 2.60 lakh crore was provided under the PM-GKAY, which reflects the commitment of the government to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
With a vision to transform India into a "developed nation", Modi said schemes like PM Awas Yojana (Gramin), Rural Road Programme, and Ujjwala Yojana are enhancing rural development.
Only a strong and developed village can make a strong and developed nation, he added.
Concluding his speech, Modi said the government is committed to the overall development of rural India and is continuously working towards empowering villages.
He urged everyone to work collectively to ensure a bright future for the villages and to build a developed India.
