DMK MP Kanimozhi criticized the central government for prioritizing Sanskrit language, arguing that it's no longer a language in common use and that this preference is responsible for the decline of other languages like Marathi.
Recently, DMK MP Kanimozhi slammed the central government for allegedly prioritizing Sanskrit language at the cost of other languages like Marathi. At a function organized to celebrate Marathi Language Awareness Day, the MP criticized the government for prioritizing Sanskrit, arguing that it is no longer a language in common use. She argued that the emphasis on Sanskrit, a language primarily used in religious and ceremonial contexts, had led to the decline of languages like Marathi.
Kanimozhi stated that when the DMK regime was previously in power, Marathi was widely spoken and prioritized in schools and offices. However, the situation has now changed, with Sanskrit being given precedence over regional languages. She emphasized the importance of mother tongue and pointed out that learning happens smoothly when taught in mother tongue during the initial stages of education.
Her statements sparked a fresh language row, highlighting the ongoing struggle between regional languages and the central government's emphasis on a language like Sanskrit, which many perceive as a ceremonial language.
The central government has not yet responded to Kanimozhi's remarks.
