Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the 16th edition of the armed forces' conference at the Eastern Command Headquarters in Kolkata. The three-day conference, held from January 23 to 25, is the apex brainstorming forum of the armed forces, bringing together the nation's top civil and military leadership to exchange views at the conceptual and strategic levels.

"The conference aims to provide directions for the Indian Armed Forces and evolve essential operational and organizational strategies for the defense of the country. This conference is significant since it is the first full-fledged conference after the creation of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA). It also coincides with the celebrations of the Swarnim Vijay Varsh victory anniversary of the 1971 war," said an official release.

Top defense leaders, including Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari, are present at the conference.

This edition of the conference, themed "Reorienting Indian Armed Forces to Changing Security Dynamics: Focus on Eastern Frontier," aims to review the operational preparedness of the Eastern Command, which has a critical role in safeguarding the country's borders in the region.

As the conference focuses on India's eastern frontier, stakeholders will discuss key challenges and strategize to enhance the country's defense capabilities and preparedness in the region.

"The prime minister's presence at the inaugural session of the conference underscores the importance of jointmanship and integration of the civil-military leadership in charting the course of the country's defense ecosystem," the release added.

This development comes shortly after the country's first Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, stepped down from his position. The conference provided a platform for the new defense leadership to showcase their vision and strategies moving forward.
