Despite the widespread availability of rideshare services, the tendency of
some individuals to drink and drive remains a significant concern in
many countries. This is exemplified by the recent drunk driving
enforcement drive conducted by the Cyberabad Traffic Police in
Hyderabad, India over the weekend.
According to the police, a special team was deployed as part of a
large-scale campaign to conduct checks on drunk driving. Their efforts
resulted in the apprehension of 435 individuals found to be driving
under the influence of alcohol. The operation involved checking
motorists on all types of vehicles, from two-wheelers to four-wheel
vehicles and heavy trucks.
The police further noted that based on the Breath Alcohol Content
(BAC), most of these drivers were categorized as moderately drunk,
while 11 were classified as heavily drunk. Interestingly, the largest
number of offenders was observed in the 21-30 age group (183),
followed by the 31-40 age group (154). The police did not disclose
the gender of the offenders.
All 435 offenders will now have to appear before the courts which
recently dealt with 910 drunk driving cases the previous week,
resulting in fines for 908 of these and brief jail sentences for two
others.
One individual was jailed for a day, and the other served two days
in prison. Another two offenders were assigned social service as
part of their penalty. These latest efforts by the Cyberabad Traffic
Police highlight their commitment to reducing the incidence of drunk
driving and ensuring the safety of all road users.
With stricter enforcement and increased public awareness, hopefully,
there will be a significant reduction in the number of drunk driving
offences in the years to come.
