Three major US airlines have jumped into the fray surrounding the killing of controversial speaker Charlie Kirk, with Delta, American Airlines, and United Airlines suspending employees over social media posts that all three companies deemed as promoting violence.
The employees Posts that allegedly promoted violence were in response to the killing of Kirk, who was fatally shot onstage during a speaking appearance in Austin, Texas on Sunday.
Kirk, who was 22, rose to prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA, an organization focused on conservative activism on college campuses.
According to reports, the suspension of the employees on social media posts was temporary, and they will be able to return to work once they remove the posts promoting violence and undergo training.
Delta Airlines officials said they would not tolerate discrimination or the promotion of violence,
"We have apologized to our crew member and will ensure this language is not used by other crew members," the statement said.
American Airlines released a similar statement, saying they have also suspended an employee over social media posts referencing Mr. Kirk's murder and that "we are investigating and are appalled by the insensitive and unacceptable social media comments made by this individual."
United Airlines also stated that they had temporarily suspended an employee after comments made on social media regarding the shooting were "completely inappropriate" and against the company's policies.
The three airlines are the latest national companies to jump into the debate, which has largely been sparked by the widespread debate over whether Mr. Kirk's speech inspired the shooter to act or whether the speaker was simply collateral damage in a broader attack on the right-leaning political ideology.
Several politicians and public figures have come under fire for seemingly celebrating Mr. Kirk's death.
The three airlines' responses today reflect an evolving approach to free speech and employee responsibility, both within the companies and in society at large.
While social media posts advocating violence merit investigation and likely merit disciplinary action, posts deemed inappropriate or offensive to specific groups are often met with reinstatement and additional training.
