Andhra Pradesh Incentives Aimed at Reducing Farm Fertilizer Usage

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Naidu, has announced incentives for farmers who use less than the recommended quantity of fertilizers. This step is being seen as a measure to promote sustainable farming practices and to address the problem of growing fertilizer consumption in the state. Speaking at a recent event, the Chief Minister clarified that there is no shortage of urea supply in the state but stressed that officials must plan in advance to ensure its timely availability.

Naidu announced that farmers who use 25% less urea would receive an incentive of Rs. 1,000, while those who use 50% less would receive Rs. 2,000. In addition, farmers who use organic fertilizers would receive Rs. 2,500. The Chief Minister highlighted the need to promote sustainable farming practices as the consumption of urea in the state has increased from 3.92 lakh metric tons in 2016-17 to 6.8 lakh metric tons in 2022-22, according to reports.

Farmers' groups have welcomed this initiative, with many stating that it would encourage more farmers to adopt sustainable practices while also reducing production costs. This step underscores the state government's focus on promoting sustainable farming methods and securing the livelihoods of farmers in the state.

There is no doubt that such initiatives will be closely watched by other states in India to see if they too should promote similar incentives to encourage sustainable farming practices and address the growing problem of excessive fertilizer usage.
