Sourav Ganguly silent on Pak spat, focuses on terror camps instead

Cricket icon Sourav Ganguly, who was accompanying the Indian team as its Board of Control Commissioner, refused to be drawn into the controversy surrounding the captains of both teams refusing to shake hands at the Asia Cup.

Responding to a query regarding the same, the former Indian captain kept focus on the larger picture, saying, "I don't know what happened, you will have to ask them, I was standing far away. For me, it's (terrorism) bigger than the sport."

The comment came after the end of the match between India and Pakistan, which the Men in Blue won by five wickets. The game was charged with tension as the two neighbors resumed their sporting rivalry for the first time since the 2019 terror attack in Kashmir that killed more than 40 Indian security personnel.

"We have seen enough of people dying every day. Terror camps are more dangerous than cricket," Ganguly added.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and his Indian counterpart, Rohit Sharma, refused to shake hands after the conclusion of the match, as is customary. Instead, they exchanged pleasantries and nodded at each other before their respective teams joined them and marched past without shaking hands with their opposition counterparts.

Ganguly's remarks come as Indian and Pakistani athletes try to keep sports separate from politics in the hope that the rivalry can become an avenue for peace and friendship.
