Fake Trading Losses Symptom of Social Media Addiction

Unfortunately, cases of online scammer-victim duets are all too common, but that doesn't make them any less devastating. Just this August, a Hyderabad man lost almost Rs 10 lakh to ruthless online scammers who exploited his social media addiction.

The victim, a 46-year-old man, happened to come across a scammer's Instagram reel promoting a stock trading app called NOMURA. It promised financial benefits through stock trading, and the man was convinced to contact the scammers. He was later guided to invest via the app and transferred a total of Rs 9,65,400.

The scammers used the man's contact to not only defraud him but to extract more money. They made him pay an additional Rs 18 lakh when he tried to withdraw, and then they blocked his account. The man grew suspicious and contacted the police.

Unfortunately, many people do not recover their losses in these situations, not only in terms of finances but also in terms of the emotional trauma caused.

Police have advised citizens to not trust investment schemes or any promotion on social media reels or unknown WhatsApp groups.

Unfortunately, financial scams are not the only crimes escalating on social media. With increasing social media addiction and lack of privacy, there are more opportunities for stalkers and cyberbullies to exploit the system.

In a recent incident in Hyderabad, a 33-year-old man was sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a minor girl and abetting her suicide. The man, Komari Shiva Kumar, was arrested in 2018 for sexually assaulting the girl on the pretext of love. He sexually assaulted her and threatened her when she returned home and was in pain. Distraught, she committed suicide that same day.

After a detailed investigation, the police altered the charges against Shiva Kumar, including rape and abetting suicide, and he was convicted this week.

Judge N. Amaravathi of the Fast Track Special Court for Rape and Pocso Cases sentenced Shiva Kumar to life in prison for rape and abetting suicide. He was also fined Rs 70,000, to be paid to the victim's family as compensation.

These incidents are a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of innocent people in our increasingly connected world, as well as the importance of dealing with these matters seriously and promptly.

In other news from Hyderabad, a senior citizen was found murdered in his home in the early hours of Monday morning. The victim, Mr. K. Shivaiah, 70, had returned home after drinking, but when his family tried to reach him, they discovered he did not respond to the doorbell. The police were alerted and broke down the door, only to discover Shivaiah lying in a pool of blood in the hall. He had been stabbed multiple times and had his throat slit. The culprits are still at large.

Police have suggested that the motive may be previous enmity, and they are examining CCTV footage from a nearby liquor shop to help identify the perpetrators. Two suspects have been detained for questioning in the matter.
