India Dominates England in 1st T20I with a Crushing Victory

India started their five-match T20I series against England in style, securing a convincing win in the 1st T20 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The hosts comfortably chased down England’s modest target of 133 in just 12.5 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Abhishek Sharma’s explosive knock of 79 off 34 balls was the highlight of India’s dominant performance.

England’s Struggles with the Bat

After opting to bat first, England got off to a horrific start as their openers, Phil Salt (0) and Ben Duckett (4), fell cheaply to Arshdeep Singh. Despite Jos Buttler’s counterattacking 68 off 44 balls, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Harry Brook (17), Liam Livingstone (0), and Jacob Bethell (7) failed to build partnerships, leaving England struggling. A late run-out of Mark Wood ended their innings at 132/10 in 20 overs.

India’s bowling was exceptional, with Varun Chakravarthy (3/23) and Axar Patel (2/22) making crucial breakthroughs. Arshdeep Singh was impressive early on, finishing with 2/17 in four overs, dismantling England’s top order.

Abhishek Sharma’s Fireworks Lead India’s Chase

India’s response was nothing short of dominant, thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s breathtaking 79 off 34 balls, which included five fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 232.35. Although captain Suryakumar Yadav departed for a duck, Sanju Samson (26) and Tilak Varma (19)* provided stability, ensuring there were no hiccups. Hardik Pandya (3)* finished the chase, as India cruised to 133/3 in 12.5 overs, sealing a comprehensive seven-wicket victory.

With this win, India takes an early 1-0 lead in the five-match series, setting the tone for the upcoming games. The second T20I will be played on Saturday, January 25, in Chennai, where England will look to bounce back.
