FIFA announced the suspension of thePakistan Football Federation (PFF) from participating in internationalcompetitions, alongside the football association of the Republic of Congo(FECOFOOT). The PFF's suspension was due to its failure to adopt a revisedversion of its constitution, which would have ensured fair and democraticelections.
This is not the first time Pakistanhas faced suspension, as FIFA had previously banned the PFF in 2017 and 2021due to third-party interference. The last suspension was lifted in 2022 afterthe PFF's Normalization Committee claimed it had regained full control over thefederation's finances and facilities. According to FIFA’s statement, thesuspension will only be lifted if the PFF Congress approves the constitutiondraft provided by FIFA and the AFC.
FIFA’s statement emphasized that thesuspension was imposed because the PFF had failed to revise its constitution ina way that would ensure truly fair and democratic elections, fulfilling itsobligations under FIFA's ongoing normalization process.
PFF Normalization Committee chairmanHaroon Malik informed local media on Thursday that most of the newly electedPFF Congress members had not agreed to FIFA’s proposed changes.
“FIFA seeks amendments to align thePFF Constitution with international standards. However, the majority of thenewly-elected Congress members have not accepted FIFA’s proposals,” Malik said,as reported by Reuters. He also confirmed that all elections had beencompleted, and the Congress members would now oversee the next phase.
