At just 15 years old, Maaya Rajeshwaran is making a significant impact in the world of tennis with her exceptional performances. The rising Indian star continued her impressive run at the L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125 Series, securing a spot in the semifinals at the prestigious Cricket Club of India. Her victories over higher-ranked opponents have solidified her reputation as one of India’s most promising young talents. Maaya’s journey in the tournament has been nothing short of remarkable, as she triumphed over World No. 264 Nicole Fossa Huergo of Italy in a tough three-set match (6–3, 3–6, 6–0) before defeating World No. 434 Jessica Failla of the United States (7–6(9), 1–6, 6–4). These wins made her the youngest Indian player ever to earn a WTA point, a testament to her immense potential.
A Rising Star
Given a qualifying wildcard by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association, Maaya has made the most of her opportunity at the WTA 125 event, the second-highest level of professional women’s tennis, just below the WTA Tour. Her game has drawn comparisons to some of tennis’ greats, including her idols Serena Williams and Aryna Sabalenka. Whether dominating from the baseline or confidently charging the net, Maaya’s ability to construct points with precision has caught the attention of the tennis world. In her main-draw debut, she stunned World No. 225 Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus with a commanding 6–4, 6–1 victory, showcasing maturity well beyond her years.
The Path of a Future Champion
Born on June 12, 2009, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Maaya’s journey into tennis began almost by chance when she took it up as an after-school activity at age eight. She developed her early skills under the guidance of former India No. 1 K.G. Ramesh before moving to Pro Serve Tennis Academy, where coach Manoj Kumar has played a key role in her development over the past five years. Despite being just in her fifth senior tournament, Maaya has exuded confidence and composure, earning praise from all quarters. A training stint at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca has further propelled her career, and she now has a one-year contract at the prestigious academy. This month, she will relocate to Spain to elevate her training.
Having seen Rafael Nadal’s legendary training sessions firsthand, Maaya now embarks on her journey to greatness, driven by determination and an ever-expanding skillset. With her rapid rise, she is certainly a player to watch in the tennis world.
