In a powerful initiative, final-year Development Communication students at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), are taking a stand against a silent crisis. The students launched a campaign to shed light on the often-overlooked issue of modern substance abuse, a growing concern among their peers. This campaign, which began with a two-day symposium, is a bold step towards educating and empowering the youth of Ghana.

The symposium, held from May 8 to 9, 2025, was a comprehensive effort to address the complex issue of substance abuse. It featured a keynote address by Hakeem Osofo Rees, Deputy Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission in the Greater Accra Region. Mr. Rees provided a stark definition of modern substance abuse, encompassing a broad spectrum of substances, from illegal drugs and synthetic compounds to alcohol and prescription drugs. He highlighted the alarming rise in substance abuse among Ghanaian youth, attributing it to mental health struggles, social expectations, and environmental influences.

The event organizers, led by Project Coordinator and lecturer Madam Sandra Yeboah Nyarko, ensured the symposium was not just informative but also interactive. It included engaging sessions, personal testimonies, and educational exhibits, all designed to empower attendees with the knowledge to make healthy choices and become advocates for change within their communities. Madam Yeboah praised the students' ability to apply their academic skills to address a pressing societal problem, emphasizing the practical impact of development communication.
