Hyderabad's Water Board Gears Up for Monsoon Challenges

As the monsoon season intensifies, Hyderabad's water management authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure the city's infrastructure can withstand the deluge. With the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) at the forefront, a comprehensive plan is in motion to tackle potential flooding and its aftermath.

On Thursday, Managing Director Ashok Reddy and Executive Director Mayank Mittal issued a call to arms, urging field officials to be vigilant. The strategy focuses on areas prone to flooding and those at lower elevations, where the impact of heavy rainfall can be devastating. A special operation has been mandated for the next two days, starting at 6 AM and lasting until 9 AM, to swiftly address any rain-induced problems. The MD, Mr. Reddy, has ordered the immediate removal of floodwaters from affected neighborhoods, emphasizing the importance of swift action. Additionally, he has instructed Deputy General Managers to oversee the inspection of sewer jetting machines, ensuring they are ready for any emergency.

The scope of the operation extends to residential areas, where officials will address complaints related to blocked pipes and conduct thorough inspections of deep manholes and sewage-prone locations. Water quality checks during supply hours are crucial to guarantee the city's drinking water remains safe and uncontaminated, especially in vulnerable areas like slums and low-lying neighborhoods. The ED, Mr. Mittal, has also stressed the importance of field worker safety, urging them to wear protective gear, including helmets, gloves, and gumboots. As a preventive measure, chlorine tablets will be distributed in flood-affected areas to mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases.

The HMWSSB's proactive approach, in collaboration with the GHMC, police, and other agencies, aims to ensure Hyderabad's resilience against the monsoon's challenges. With a well-coordinated effort, the city aims to weather the storm and maintain essential services without disruption.
