A recent India Today Mood of the Nation (MOTN) survey has revealed that more than 40% of Indians believe a second term for former U.S. President Donald Trump would be beneficial for India. This perception stems from the belief that Trump’s policies on trade, defense, and strategic cooperation could strengthen U.S.-India ties and enhance India’s global standing.
During his previous term, Trump’s tough stance on China and his vocal support for India on global platforms made him a popular figure among many Indians. His administration played a key role in advancing defense agreements with India, promoting trade, and aligning on counter-terrorism strategies. Many see his return as an opportunity to build on these foundations and further boost bilateral relations. His business-centric approach and focus on strengthening global partnerships have created optimism that a second term could lead to economic growth and enhanced strategic cooperation between the two nations.
The survey also offered insights into India’s internal political scenario. If elections were held today, 47% of respondents would vote for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while 41% supported the opposition alliance headed by Rahul Gandhi. Respondents expressed satisfaction with the Modi government’s performance in areas like national security, infrastructure development, and social welfare programs. However, there were concerns about unemployment, rising inflation, and challenges in the agricultural sector.
There is growing interest among Indians in U.S. politics, especially presidential elections, given their influence on global markets and India’s foreign policy. A significant number of respondents closely follow developments in the U.S., believing they impact India’s economic and strategic interests.
Experts suggest that if Trump returns to power in 2025, the Indo-U.S. relationship could experience further growth. His policies may focus on countering Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region, expanding trade, and deepening defense collaborations, all of which are seen as favorable for India’s future.
