Hyderabad Fights Back: Reclaiming Public Spaces

In a significant victory for public spaces, the Hyderabad District Revenue Authorities (HYDRAA) have successfully recovered over 1,600 square yards of encroached land, valued at a staggering Rs 16 crore. This decisive action not only restores valuable real estate to the city but also underscores the importance of community areas in urban planning.

The first operation, a response to a complaint from the Motinagar Cooperative Housing Society, focused on the Balanagar Mandal area. Here, land belonging to the Sanathnagar Cooperative Society, originally designated for a park, had been unlawfully occupied. Established in 1967 with a clear mandate for green spaces, the layout had its park land reclaimed. A joint effort by various departments, including GHMC, DTCP, and the Revenue Department, led to the removal of encroachments. The park's boundaries were secured with fencing, and warning signs were installed to prevent future incidents.

HYDRAA's second intervention occurred in Madinaguda village, Ranga Reddy district, where a similar story of encroachment played out. A plot meant for public amenities was partially occupied by a cow shelter and a flour mill. The Sri Abhayanjaneya Welfare Association's complaint prompted a ground-level inspection, resulting in the removal of these structures. The cows found on the site were relocated to the ISKCON temple, ensuring their care while freeing up the land.

"Land reserved for parks and public amenities is a non-negotiable asset for any community," said a HYDRAA official. "We will continue to act swiftly on complaints and ensure that Hyderabad's public spaces are protected and accessible to all." This proactive approach to encroachment sends a clear message: Hyderabad is reclaiming its public spaces, fostering a healthier and more vibrant urban environment. The city's residents can now look forward to enjoying the benefits of these recovered areas, which will undoubtedly contribute to an improved quality of life.
