Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam Open with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori. The top-seeded Spaniard showcased his power and precision, sealing the win in just over an hour.
Alcaraz, wearing a breathing aid as he recovers from illness, started strong, breaking Vavassori in the opening game. He continued his aggressive play in the second set, breaking twice before sealing the match with a blistering forehand return.
“I had no ups and downs today, which is good for me. I’m working on my consistency,” said Alcaraz, who had struggled in a near three-hour battle against Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round.
The Spaniard now faces Pedro Martinez in the quarter-finals after Martinez upset fifth seed Holger Rune 6-4, 6-1.
Tsitsipas Survives Thriller
Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas had a much tougher outing, battling from a set down to defeat Tallon Griekspoor in a marathon 6-7 (5), 7-6 (8), 7-5 victory. The Greek saved a match point and fought for nearly three hours to overcome the home favorite.
“I feel like I was here for 10 hours today,” joked Tsitsipas, adding that the Dutchman pushed him to his limits.
The world No. 12 now takes on Mattia Bellucci, the Italian qualifier who stunned second seed Daniil Medvedev in another long three-setter.
Other Quarter-Finalists
Also advancing is last year’s runner-up, Alex de Minaur, who secured a solid 6-4, 6-4 win over Czech teenager Jakub Mensik.
With several thrilling encounters already in the books, the Rotterdam Open is heating up as the tournament heads toward the semi-finals.
