India eliminated from Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships following defeat to Japan

India’s hopes of securing a medal atthe Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships for the second consecutive editionwere dashed on Friday, February 14. In the quarter-finals held in Qingdao,China, India suffered a 0-3 defeat to Japan, ending their campaign. Despite astrong lineup, India, who won the bronze in the 2023 edition, couldn’t make itpast the quarter-final stage this year. The loss was particularlydisappointing, as India’s top doubles teams – Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-ChiragShetty and Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly – didn’t even get a chance tocompete, with the tie decided before the final two doubles match.

HS Prannoy, a star player for India,was unable to keep the tie alive in the men’s singles match after India hadalready fallen 0-2 behind. Prannoy fought hard against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto,ranked higher, but eventually lost 14-21, 21-15, 12-21 in a 77-minute battle,giving Japan an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Earlier in the day, Dhruv Kapila andTanisha Crasto gave a spirited performance in their match against the World No.12 pairing of Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito. After losing the first game, theybounced back to win the second, but ultimately lost 13-21, 21-17, 13-21 in 61minutes, handing Japan the early advantage.

Malvika Bansod then faced World No. 8Tomoka Miyazaki, but despite a valiant effort, Bansod was defeated 12-21,19-21, putting India in an untenable position. India also missed the servicesof PV Sindhu, who withdrew from the tournament due to injury.
