In a dramatic rescue operation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully saved a kidnapping victim, Nafiu Idris, following a 30-minute gunfight with a gang of kidnappers in the Guzape district of Abuja. This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's capital city and the police's proactive measures to combat crime.
Idris, an employee of the FCT's Women Affairs Department, was abducted from his residence in Karu on September 17, 2025, at approximately 10:30 p.m. The kidnappers, three in number, shot into the air before taking him to an undisclosed location, where they bound his hands with cloth and held him in a cave. The kidnappers then initiated communication with Idris' family, demanding a ransom.
However, the police, led by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, swiftly responded to the incident. In a raid conducted between September 15 and 18, the police engaged in a life-threatening gun duel with the kidnappers, ultimately rescuing Idris and killing the perpetrators. The operation also led to the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and other incriminating items, including drugs and drug-related paraphernalia.
Commissioner Adewale emphasized the police's commitment to maintaining law and order, stating, "Our proactive anti-kidnapping and anti-banditry patrols are ongoing across border communities and identified hotspots." This successful rescue operation underscores the police's determination to combat crime and protect citizens in Abuja and its environs. The public can take solace in the knowledge that the police are actively working to ensure their safety and security.
