Drug Agency Commander Found Dead in Hotel Room

The sudden and mysterious death of a high-ranking official has sent shockwaves through Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Ogbonna Maurice Uzoma, the newly appointed Commander for Cross River State, was discovered lifeless in his hotel room, leaving colleagues and the agency in mourning.

Uzoma's death was announced in a statement by the NDLEA on Friday, revealing a series of events that unfolded on September 18th, 2025. The Commander, who had only recently assumed his post on August 18th, was staying in a hotel in Calabar while awaiting permanent accommodation. On the fateful day, his officers, concerned about his uncharacteristic silence, proceeded to his hotel room. Despite their persistent knocks and calls, Uzoma did not respond. The hotel staff's attempts to open the door from the outside were unsuccessful, leading to a staff member entering through the ceiling aperture to unlock the door from within. Inside, they made the grim discovery of the Commander's lifeless body.

The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, expressed his condolences, stating that the agency stands with Uzoma's family in their time of grief. The Police Commissioner personally visited the scene, and an investigation into the cause of death is underway. The agency has directed Zonal Commander Mathew Ewah to relocate to Calabar to assist in the police inquiry.

As the NDLEA grapples with this unexpected loss, the focus shifts to the ongoing investigation, leaving the agency and the public awaiting answers to the circumstances surrounding Uzoma's tragic demise.
