Ramkumar Ramanathan Advances to Final Qualifying Round at Maha Open ATP Challenger

Unseeded Indian player RamkumarRamanathan pulled off an impressive upset against top seed Elias Ymer of Swedento reach the final qualifying round of the Maha Open ATP Challenger 100 tennischampionship in Pune on Sunday. The 30-year-old Ramanathan avenged his DavisCup loss to the Swedish star last year, winning 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in a matchlasting 1 hour and 52 minutes. Ymer, 28, played a strong first set, butRamanathan responded with an aggressive serve-and-volley game to dominate thesecond set. Despite failing to break Ymer in the third game, the Chennai playersecured a crucial break in the fifth, ultimately sealing the victory.

Currently ranked 403rd, Ramanathan hitnine aces during the match, earning a spot in the final qualifying round.

In other matches, sixth-seeded RussianIlia Simakin defeated India’s No. 2 Mukund Sasikumar 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 15minutes to advance to the final round. Twelfth-seeded Australian MatthewDellavedova proved too experienced for 16-year-old wildcard Arnav VijayPaparkar, winning 6-2, 6-3, though Paparkar showcased flashes of potential.

Jiri Vesely, a former Maha Open ATPTour winner and currently ranked 35th in the world, made a strong return to thetournament by beating local wildcard Siddhant Banthia 6-2, 6-3. Eleventh-seededSouth African Kris Van Wyk battled hard against wildcard Nitin Kumar Sinha,eventually prevailing 7-5, 7-5, while fourth-seeded Australian Blake Ellisovercame an early challenge to defeat Indian wildcard Sidharth Rawat 7-5, 6-2.

In two notable upsets, Russian PetrBar Biryukov stunned second-seeded Oleksandr Ovcharenko of Ukraine 6-3, 7-6(6),and Japanese player Hiroki Moriya defeated fifth-seeded Jacopo Berrettini ofItaly 7-5, 6-3.
