Exploring Pulicat’s Rich History

As part of the Madras Day celebrations, the AARDE Foundation is hosting the heritage walk "Trace Origin of Madras" in Pulicat, an ancient port town. This walk, now in its 12th edition, offers participants a chance to explore the historical landmarks of the town and understand the early roots of Madras. The walk is a fascinating journey through Pulicat’s history, focusing on its significance as a thriving port and its contributions to the growth of the region.

A Visit to the AARDE Museum

The AARDE Foundation’s museum in Pulicat serves as the first stop for the heritage walk. Founded over a decade ago, the museum houses a variety of historical artifacts, including some rare cotton fishing nets, a reminder of the region’s past. Unlike the modern nylon nets used today, these cotton nets were an essential part of fishing life in the area. The museum also showcases objects unearthed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in Pulicat, such as ancient pots, fishing nets, and kalamkari fabrics—all of which paint a vivid picture of the town’s rich cultural and commercial past.

Crafts and Livelihood in Pulicat

The walk also highlights the continuing traditional crafts that sustain the local community. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the art of making palm leaf boxes, a skill that provides financial stability to the women of the area. This craft, passed down through generations, remains an important part of Pulicat's economy and cultural heritage. Xavier Benedict, the founder-trustee of AARDE, will lead the walk and share his insights on the town’s historical and cultural evolution, making it a unique opportunity for both history enthusiasts and curious visitors.

A Morning of Discovery

The heritage walk will begin at 7 a.m. from Loyola’s ICAM Gate on Mahalingapuram Main Road, with participants arriving in Pulicat by 9 a.m. After the museum visit, the walk will take participants through various points of historical significance in the town, providing a deeper understanding of how the ancient port played a crucial role in shaping the development of Madras. This immersive experience offers an invaluable glimpse into the historical fabric of the region, preserving its stories for future generations.
