Manchester City's New Signings Bring Hope for a Real Madrid Comeback

Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, stated that his team has just a 1% chance of advancing to the Champions League last 16 against Real Madrid on Wednesday. However, the recent arrivals at the club might provide a glimmer of hope. City squandered a late 2-1 lead in the first leg of the play-off tie at home last week, ultimately losing 3-2 to the defending champions. This collapse added to a wider pattern throughout the season, as Guardiola’s aging squad has struggled to maintain consistency, especially in high-intensity Champions League matches. As a result, City broke from their usual transfer approach, splashing out £170 million ($214 million) in January to sign Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Nico Gonzalez.

However, none of these new players started the first leg against Madrid. Marmoush was the only one to make a brief appearance off the bench, while Gonzalez and Khusanov remained unused substitutes, and Reis was not included in the European squad.

Guardiola may now regret not utilizing them, as Marmoush, Khusanov, and Gonzalez all played crucial roles in what was arguably City’s best performance of the season, a 4-0 victory over Newcastle at the Etihad on Saturday.

Marmoush grabbed the headlines with a first-half hat-trick, offering City another potent attacking threat alongside Erling Haaland. Khusanov, who had a difficult Premier League debut against Chelsea last month, bounced back strongly. The 20-year-old's speed helped neutralize the threat posed by Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and could be key to containing the attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo in Madrid.

Guardiola also singled out Gonzalez for praise, as his presence brought the balance to City’s midfield that had been missing since Rodri’s serious knee injury in September. The Barcelona academy graduate is expected to start in Madrid, with Guardiola already referring to him as a “mini Rodri.”

Micah Richards, a former City player, emphasized Gonzalez’s influence, noting that his inclusion would provide crucial stability behind City’s attackers. “City have players who can score and hurt Real, but he brings balance, which they will need in Madrid. With him in the starting 11, they have a much better chance of beating Real,” Richards said.

Despite the renewed optimism, City faces a familiar challenge. Even in their best years under Guardiola, Madrid has often proven too formidable in the Champions League. This marks the fourth consecutive season the two sides have met, with Madrid's 5-1 aggregate win on their way to the 2023 title being City’s only success.

In 2021, City appeared on the brink of a final berth, leading by two goals in the second leg, only for Rodrygo’s quick brace to force extra time and send Madrid to their 14th European crown. Last year, it was penalties that saw Madrid progress after two drawn quarter-final matches.

Guardiola acknowledged that it is unlikely his side will find their best form in time for this crucial encounter. “This season, we’ve been far off our best. If you’d asked me before today’s game, I’d say we have a 1% chance, but we’ll try,” he said. “The results have been poor, but we won’t change our mindset after just one game.”

Yet, the fresh influx of talent has given City fans a glimmer of hope for a potential miracle in Madrid.
