Spy Cameras: Telangana's Hidden Menace

In a world where privacy is a luxury, women in Telangana, India, are facing a chilling reality. The state recorded a staggering 157 cases of voyeurism in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). But this statistic barely scratches the surface of a pervasive issue.

The recent protest by 200 women at CMR Engineering College in Medchal, alleging the presence of spy cameras in their hostel, is just one of many incidents bringing this hidden menace to light. The Telangana High Court has taken notice, directing the state police to report on the measures taken to address the illegal use of spy cameras in public spaces. The court's memo highlights the need for cautionary stickers on these devices, warning purchasers of the legal consequences of non-consensual recording under Section 66(E) of the Information Technology Act.

However, the problem runs deeper than just sales. The easy availability of spy cameras, often without the required warnings, is a significant concern. Online platforms like Amazon and Flipkart offer these devices with little oversight. Shockingly, when the Deccan Chronicle investigated, no records of police action against shops violating public safety norms were found. The 2013 Telangana Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act mandates that establishments ensure safety measures and declare their spaces free of spy cameras. Yet, the Hyderabad City Police's 'Secure and Sure' initiative, which involved checking sensitive areas for hidden cameras, seems to have lost momentum.

"While this silent crime grips the state, lack of reporting and enforcement gaps add to the problem," said a senior official from the Women's Safety Wing, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive solution that addresses both public awareness and strict enforcement of existing laws. As Telangana grapples with this hidden threat, the path to ensuring women's safety seems to be a challenging journey ahead.
