Indian Railways to Revamp 61 Karnataka Stations Under ABSS

Indian Railways has selected 61 railway stations in Karnataka for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), which aims to modernize these stations with improved facilities. The ABSS is a nationwide initiative launched in February 2023 with the goal of upgrading 1,309 railway stations across India. Its focus is on enhancing the overall quality of stations, addressing the need for better infrastructure, passenger amenities, and sustainability. Each station will be redeveloped through master plans and implemented in phases, with a special emphasis on improving passenger amenities, traffic circulation, and inter-modal connectivity.

The scheme incorporates several improvements, such as modern waiting areas, restrooms, food outlets, and enhanced traffic flow with separate entry and exit points, wider roads, and adequate parking. It also promotes inter-modal integration to ensure seamless connectivity between railway stations and other transport modes. Stations will feature upgraded signage in multiple languages to guide passengers effectively. Structural improvements will include the introduction of ballastless tracks to reduce noise and vibrations, enhancing the overall travel experience. Sustainability is a key priority, with energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and green spaces being incorporated into the redevelopment. Roof plazas may also be constructed to offer additional commercial space where feasible.

The redevelopment of railway stations under the ABSS is a complex process that requires various statutory clearances, affecting the project timelines. Funding for passenger amenities falls under Plan Head – 53 ‘Customer Amenities’ and is managed by different railway zones. In Karnataka, the estimated cost for the redevelopment of these stations is ₹2,000 crore. The Karnataka redevelopment project includes the Bengaluru Division, where 15 stations, including Bangarpet and Whitefield, will be revamped. Additionally, 13 stations in the state will be rejuvenated to feature shopping zones, food courts, and facilities for the physically challenged, turning them into urban hubs for socio-economic activities.
