Bharat Tex 2025, a global textile event, took place in New Delhi from February 14 to 17, 2025. During the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set ambitious targets for India's textile exports, aiming to increase exports from ₹3 lakh crore to ₹9 lakh crore by 2030.
The second edition of Bharat Tex 2025, organized by twelve export promotion councils and supported by the Ministry of Textiles, gathered over 5,000 exhibitors. The exhibition spanned 2.2 million square feet and showcased a wide range of products, from raw materials to finished goods. The event attracted more than 6,000 international buyers from over 110 countries, including Japan, the UAE, and the USA. This strong global participation underscored India's growing position in the textile industry.
Sustainability was a key focus of the event, with innovations such as organic fabrics and energy-efficient production technologies being highlighted. Several projects funded by the European Union aimed to further promote sustainability and women’s economic empowerment in the textile sector.
Bharat Tex 2025 also hosted over 70 conferences, roundtables, and master classes, covering topics like global trade shifts, technical textiles, and AI-driven manufacturing. These sessions served as an opportunity for policymakers and industry leaders to discuss the future of textiles and foster international collaborations.
The event utilized an advanced technology platform, including a mobile app that enhanced engagement and networking among participants. This app allowed users to explore developments in the textile value chain and provided a better overall experience for both exhibitors and visitors.
On the sidelines of the event, the European Union (EU) and India’s Ministry of Textiles launched seven new projects aimed at supporting the textile and handicraft sector. The EU is funding these projects with €9.5 million (₹85.5 crore). The focus of the projects is on sustainability, resource efficiency, women’s empowerment, and promoting economic growth within the textile industry.
The projects will be implemented across nine states: Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Haryana. These initiatives are expected to benefit 35,000 direct beneficiaries, including 15,000 MSMEs, 5,000 artisans, and 15,000 farmer-producers. Over the next 3 to 5 years, these projects aim to economically empower 200,000 women.
These efforts align with India’s “Sustainable Bharat Mission for Textiles” and are part of the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, which complements the EU-India Circular Economy Initiative. The projects are being implemented with India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change and are executed by GIZ.
India's textile sector, which employs 45 million people, faces several challenges such as high emissions, energy use, water consumption, and low recycling rates. Despite these challenges, the sector remains a significant contributor to India’s economy, with women constituting 60% of the workforce.
