Ukraine Defends Against Massive Drone Attack
Ukraine's military reported that Russia launched a barrage of 147 attack drones overnight, targeting several key locations across the country. The Ukrainian Air Force managed to shoot down 83 drones, while another 59 were intercepted before reaching their targets. The attack caused damage to storage facilities and private residences. The escalation highlights the ongoing threat posed by Russia's aerial assault on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Ukrainian Drone Strikes Russian Oil Infrastructure
In a retaliatory move, Ukrainian drones struck a major oil pipeline in Kropotkinskaya, located in Russia’s Krasnodar region. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium confirmed the attack, which disrupted oil supplies from neighboring Kazakhstan. Ukraine’s Security Service took responsibility for the operation, also claiming a strike on the Ilsky oil refinery in Krasnodar. At least 20 explosions were reported in the area.
Russia Gains Ground in Eastern Ukraine
On the ground, Russia's Defence Ministry announced the capture of Fyholivka, a settlement in Kharkiv region, marking a further gain for Russian forces in the region. Additionally, Russia reclaimed the village of Sverdlikovo in the Kursk region, which had previously been held by Ukrainian forces. These territorial shifts come amid ongoing clashes in eastern Ukraine.
Diplomatic Efforts and Peace Talks
In diplomatic developments, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Saudi Arabia in preparation for US-Russia peace talks concerning the war in Ukraine. The talks, expected to involve Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and foreign policy director Yuri Ushakov, will focus on restoring diplomatic relations and exploring potential pathways to a peaceful resolution.
European Divisions on Peace Efforts
At the same time, tensions within Europe over the direction of peace talks were evident as Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto expressed strong support for Donald Trump’s position on the war. Szijjarto criticized the EU's response to the peace talks, arguing that they were trying to "prevent peace" rather than supporting it. Meanwhile, Russia’s Lavrov questioned why Europe should be involved in peace talks if European leaders were not eager to end the conflict.
