In a significant blow to transnational organised crime, New Zealand authorities have seized nearly $1 million in cash, an arsenal of firearms, and a substantial quantity of drugs in a five-month operation, culminating in 11 arrests. This operation, named 'Mexted', has targeted a sophisticated criminal network smuggling controlled substances into the country, marking the 29th such cell dismantled since 2016.
The operation commenced in June with a search at an Air BnB in Mangere Bridge, where a cache of firearms, including four glocks and a submachine gun, was discovered. This led to the arrest of three American nationals in Onehunga, charged with importing methamphetamine and organised crime participation. The investigation's second phase in August resulted in four more arrests across Auckland, with charges related to methamphetamine importations and possession.
As the operation progressed, its scope widened. On September 8, a Takapuna apartment search yielded over $800,000 in cash, leading to a money laundering charge. Simultaneously, a Mount Wellington address search uncovered methamphetamine and cash, resulting in another arrest. The final phase on September 18 saw a coordinated effort across Auckland and Waikato, with 10 properties raided and seven more individuals detained.
"We are continuing to focus our efforts on these syndicates establishing themselves for financial greed while preying on vulnerable communities," said Acting Detective Inspector Jason Hunt of the National Organised Crime Group. This operation's success underscores the ongoing battle against organised crime and the importance of inter-agency collaboration, as highlighted by Acting Customs Investigations Manager Simon Peterson's statement on Customs' role in identifying and tracking the syndicate's activities. With the accused facing a range of serious charges, the operation's impact on disrupting drug supply and protecting the public is evident.
