Macron to Urge Trump to Stay Firm on Putin Amid Ukraine War Concerns

French President Emmanuel Macron plans to visit Washington to urge U.S. President Donald Trump to maintain a firm stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Macron expressed concerns over Trump's openness to resuming diplomacy with Russia to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, potentially bypassing European allies and Kyiv. He emphasized that showing weakness towards Putin would undermine Western efforts to counter threats from Russia, China, and Iran.

Macron's visit comes amid a shifting geopolitical landscape, with the U.S. signaling a possible reduction of its military presence in Europe. This has alarmed European nations, prompting Macron to convene emergency summits with European leaders to discuss security measures and Ukraine’s position in any potential peace negotiations. The French president reiterated that Europe must strengthen its defense capabilities and increase military support to Ukraine in response to the evolving situation.

While Macron dismissed the idea of immediately deploying French troops to Ukraine, he hinted at the possibility of providing security guarantees once a ceasefire is negotiated. He also plans to discuss these concerns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump is set to meet both Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer next week in Washington. Reports suggest that Starmer may propose sending 30,000 European troops to Ukraine as part of an international security strategy.

Macron has described Russia as an "existential threat" to Europe and stressed that European nations must prepare for increased military efforts. His visit to Washington aims to reinforce European unity and convince Trump that a strong and coordinated response to Russian aggression is in the best interests of both the U.S. and its allies.
