New Zealand delivered a clinical performance to defeat Pakistan by 60 runs in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 at Karachi on Wednesday, February 19. The Kiwis put up a dominant all-round display, setting a daunting total of 320/5 in 50 overs before restricting Pakistan to 260 all out.
Latham, Young, and Phillips Shine with the Bat
Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and opted to field first, and the hosts started well, reducing New Zealand to 73/3. However, a resilient 118-run partnership between Will Young (107) and Tom Latham (118)* turned the tide in favor of the Blackcaps. Glenn Phillips added the finishing touch with a fiery 61 off 39 balls, ensuring New Zealand crossed the 300-run mark. Naseem Shah was Pakistan's most effective bowler, finishing with 2/63.
Pakistan's Struggles in the Chase
Pakistan had a disastrous start, slumping to 22/2 in 10 overs, which put them on the back foot early. Babar Azam top-scored with 64 off 90 balls, but his slow knock added pressure on the middle order. Khushdil Shah (69 off 52) and Salman Agha (42 off 28) tried to revive the innings, but Pakistan ultimately fell short. William O’Rourke and Mitchell Santner led New Zealand's bowling attack, picking up three wickets each.
What’s Next?
With this win, New Zealand have made a strong statement in the tournament. Pakistan will look to bounce back in their next match against India on February 23, while New Zealand will face Bangladesh on February 25.
