In June 2024, India's power consumption surged by nearly 9% to 152.38 billion units (BU) compared to the same period last year, driven significantly by intense summer heat that prompted widespread use of cooling appliances like air conditioners and desert coolers. This marked an increase from 140.27 BU recorded in June 2023. Concurrently, the peak power demand met in June 2024 reached 245.41 GW, up from 223.29 GW in June 2023 and surpassing the previous peak of 224.10 GW in the same month last year.
The peak power demand set an all-time record of 250.20 GW in May 2024, surpassing the previous peak of 243.27 GW in September 2023. The Ministry of Power had earlier projected peak power demands of 235 GW during daytime and 225 GW during evening hours for May, with expectations rising to 240 GW and 235 GW respectively for June 2024. Experts attribute this surge to scorching temperatures and humidity in late June, exacerbated by the onset of monsoon rains in various parts of the country, prompting heightened reliance on cooling appliances.
Looking ahead, experts anticipate steady power demand and consumption due to continuing high humidity, which will sustain the use of air conditioners and other cooling devices. The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts the Southwest Monsoon to advance further into Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana in the coming days, with expectations of nationwide coverage soon. This weather pattern is expected to influence power consumption trends as the monsoon progresses across the country.
