Nellore's Red Legacy: A Political Dynasty's Impact

In the vibrant political landscape of Nellore, a city in southern India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, has left an indelible mark. This February, the party will host its 28th State-level convention, a three-day event that will undoubtedly reflect on its rich history in the region. Since 1952, CPM has been a political force, consistently promoting its leaders to various legislative bodies, including MLAs, MPs, and Rajya Sabha members.

What sets CPM apart is the unique background of its leaders. Interestingly, some of its most influential figures, like Puchalapalli Sundaraiah (popularly known as Comrade PS) and Jakka Venkaiah, hailed from powerful landlord families of the Reddy community. Yet, they chose a different path, advocating for the poor and marginalized. Comrade PS, a three-time MLA and MP in 1952, is remembered for his simple lifestyle and a remarkable act of generositydonating hundreds of acres of fertile land to the government during the 1967 land reforms, benefiting the less fortunate. His legacy inspired others, including his grandson, Jakka Venkaiah, who later became an MLA in 1985 and 1994.

The party's commitment to its ideology is further exemplified by leaders like Basavareddy Sankaraiah, who served as an MLA twice, and Swarna Vemaiah, elected in 1957. Despite setbacks, with several leaders unsuccessfully contesting elections from 1962 to 2004, CPM's influence in Nellore remains significant. The party's representation extends to the Rajya Sabha, with P Madhu from Nellore Rural Mandal serving as a member.

As CPM prepares for its upcoming convention, the city of Nellore is poised to celebrate its political heritage and the enduring impact of a party that has truly walked the talk of equality and social justice.
