Canadians Petition to Revoke Elon Musk’s Citizenship Amid Political Tensions

Thousands of Canadians are calling for the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, with over 280,000 people signing a petition urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take action. The petition, launched on February 20, accuses Musk of acting against Canada’s national interests, alleging that he is aligned with a foreign government seeking to undermine Canadian sovereignty. It also claims that Musk has used his wealth and influence to interfere in Canadian elections.

Musk, who is a citizen of South Africa, the United States, and Canada, obtained his Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in the country. While he is widely known for leading companies like Tesla and SpaceX and owning the social media platform X, his increasing involvement in US politics, particularly as a close ally of Donald Trump, has raised concerns in Canada.

The controversy surrounding Musk has grown amid rising trade tensions between Canada and the United States. Trump has announced plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, which could threaten the long-standing North American free trade agreement. He has also proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, directly affecting Canada’s economy. Furthermore, Trump has made provocative statements about Canada’s sovereignty, referring to the country as a potential 51st US state. Musk has added to the tensions by making remarks about Trudeau, calling him “Canada’s governor” and controversially stating on X that “Canada is not a real country.”

The petition is sponsored by New Democratic Party MP Charlie Angus and will remain open for signatures until June 20. Once it closes, it will be formally presented to the Canadian Parliament, requiring a government response. However, under Canadian law, citizenship can typically only be revoked in cases of serious crimes like treason or fraud in citizenship applications. It remains uncertain whether the government will take any action on Musk’s citizenship status.
