Delhi Capitals Dominates Gujarat Giants in WPL 2025, Moves to the Top of the Table

ShafaliVerma (44) and Jess Jonassen (61 not out) led the charge for Delhi Capitals asthey demolished Gujarat Giants by six wickets in a one-sided Women's PremierLeague match on Tuesday. Chasing a modest target of 128, Delhi Capitalsachieved the target comfortably in just 15.1 overs. Verma was in excellentform, smashing a 27-ball 44, her highest score of the season. With thisvictory, Delhi moved to the top of the points table, securing their third winin five matches, although their net run rate remained negative (-0.223) in thefive-team competition.

Vermaand Jonassen shared a rapid 74-run stand for the second wicket in just 37balls, setting the platform for a dominant chase. Despite losing Meg Lanning(3) early, the pair’s aggressive batting thwarted Gujarat’s hopes of acomeback. Verma struck three sixes and five fours before being dismissed byGujarat skipper Ashleigh Gardner, who trapped her in front of the stumps.

Jonassenremained unbeaten on 61 off 32 balls, hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes, marking herfirst half-century of the season. Together, Verma and Jonassen tore apart theGujarat bowling attack, showing that the pitch, which had seemed challenging inthe first half, was actually conducive to run-scoring.

Earlier,Gujarat Giants had limped to 127 for nine after being put in to bat. The Delhipace trio of Marizanne Kapp (2/17), Shikha Pandey (2/18), and AnnabelSutherland (2/20) each took two wickets to keep the Giants in check. Gujarathad collapsed to 60 for six by the halfway mark of their innings, leaving themwith little chance of posting a competitive total.

Theonly hiccup for Delhi during their chase came when they lost Jemimah Rodrigues(5) and Sutherland (1) in quick succession. However, they cruised to victorywithout further trouble.

Earlier,Bharti Fulmali played a vital knock of 40 not out, helping Gujarat Giants past125 after a disastrous start. Coming in at No. 8, Fulmali counter-attacked withtwo sixes and four fours, scoring her runs off 29 balls. Deandra Dottin (26)also contributed with five fours, but Gujarat's efforts were not enough tochallenge Delhi's bowlers.

Delhi'space duo, Kapp and Pandey, wreaked havoc on Gujarat's top order, reducing themto 20/4 within the powerplay. Kapp started the collapse by finding the outsideedge of Harleen Deol's (5) bat before dismissing Phoebe Litchfield for a duck.Pandey followed with two quick wickets, removing Beth Mooney (10) and KashveeGautam (0) in identical fashion, both caught in the deep by Niki Prasad. TitasSadhu (1/15) then sent back Gujarat skipper Gardner (3) with a delivery thatnipped back, and Sutherland cleaned up Dottin to finish off the resistance inthe 11th over.
