The match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was abandoned due to persistent rain, with no play possible throughout the day. This washout meant both teams remained winless in the tournament, having already been eliminated from semi-final contention. India and New Zealand progressed from Group A, while South Africa, Australia, and Afghanistan remained in contention from Group B. The expected batting-friendly pitch was never put to the test, and Pakistan’s dominant record against Bangladesh in ODIs could not be extended.  

In another crucial match, Afghanistan stunned England with an eight-run victory in Lahore, eliminating the defending champions from the tournament. Ibrahim Zadran led Afghanistan’s batting with a career-best 177 off 146 balls, helping his team post 325 for 7. Despite Joe Root’s determined 120 off 111 balls, England fell short, getting bowled out for 317 in 49.5 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai played a key role with the ball, taking 5 for 58, including Root’s wicket. Mohammad Nabi contributed with both bat and ball, scoring 40 runs and picking up two wickets. This win kept Afghanistan’s hopes alive in Group B, while England's exit marked a major upset in the tournament.  

Shreyas Iyer’s performance has also been a major talking point. India struggled with an unstable middle order in past tournaments, but Shreyas has established himself as a reliable number four. He had an exceptional 2023 World Cup, scoring 530 runs at a strike rate of 113, and has continued his form into the Champions Trophy. Though he was not a certain starter, he capitalized on an opportunity when Virat Kohli was ruled out of a match against England. His 36-ball 59 in Nagpur helped India recover from 19 for 2, and his aggressive stroke play against short-pitched bowling showcased his improved technique. In the game against Pakistan, he played a key role in countering spin and maintaining momentum. From being at risk of losing his place in the national team, Shreyas has reinforced his importance to India’s batting lineup with consistent performances.  The tournament has been unpredictable, with rain interruptions, surprise victories, and key individual performances shaping the competition. Afghanistan’s progress and Shreyas Iyer’s resurgence have been among the standout stories so far.
