Barcelona and Atletico Madrid Play Out Thrilling 4-4 Draw in Copa del Rey Semifinal

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid played out a thrilling 4-4 draw in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals on Tuesday. Atletico started strong, scoring twice in the first six minutes through Julián Álvarez and Antoine Griezmann. However, Barcelona responded with four consecutive goals, with Pedri and Pau Cubarsí equalizing by the 21st minute, followed by goals from Iñigo Martínez before halftime and Robert Lewandowski in the 74th minute.

Despite leading 4-2 with 16 minutes left, Barcelona failed to hold on, as Marcos Llorente pulled one back in the 84th minute, and substitute Alexander Sorloth equalized in stoppage time. This result frustrated Barcelona’s Pedri, who emphasized the need to learn from such collapses. Atletico's Julián Álvarez praised his team’s resilience, stating that they never give up. Barcelona had dominated large portions of the match after Atletico's early goals, with Ferran Torres missing key chances. Meanwhile, Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso made important saves, and Sorloth had a goal disallowed for offside before finally scoring the dramatic equalizer.

The second leg will take place at Atletico’s Metropolitano Stadium on April 2, with the winner advancing to the final to face either Real Madrid or Real Sociedad, who play their first-leg match on Wednesday. Barcelona last won the competition in 2021, while Atletico’s last title came in 2013. The match was highly intense, with both teams showcasing attacking quality and defensive vulnerabilities. Spanish media also reported that a fan was detained due to clashes between Barcelona supporters and police. Both teams will meet again in La Liga on March 16 in Madrid before their decisive Copa del Rey clash.
