India’s Environmental Outlook 2025

The State of India’s Environment 2025 report, released on February 26, 2025, provides an in-depth analysis of India’s environmental landscape. Compiled by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Down To Earth (DTE), the report highlights key developments in climate change, pollution, waste management, and biodiversity. It also reflects on significant issues such as the rising threat of plastic waste, antimicrobial resistance, and the environmental impact of climate change on the Thar Desert. Additionally, it commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and examines India’s renewable energy goals.

In 2024, India witnessed a surge in extreme weather events, with extreme conditions recorded on 255 out of 274 days during the first nine months of the year. This marks a significant rise compared to previous years. The consequences were severe, particularly in agriculture, where more than 3.2 million hectares of cropland were affected. The report underscores the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies.

Public awareness of environmental concerns continues to grow. The Delhi assembly elections in 2025 demonstrated a shift in voter priorities, with clean air and waste management emerging as crucial electoral issues. While governments have introduced various initiatives to tackle these problems, the report criticizes the lack of ambition and the weak enforcement of existing environmental policies.

The report also warns that the youngest generation, known as Generation Alpha, will inherit a world facing unprecedented climate challenges. The year 2024 was officially recorded as the warmest on record, with global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This alarming trend poses severe risks for future generations, reinforcing the need for immediate and sustained action to combat climate change.
