In a strategic move ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Delhi Capitals have appointed former England captain Kevin Pietersen as their team mentor. Pietersen, who previously played for the franchise during the 2012 and 2014 seasons, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Pietersen stated, "I've got incredible memories of representing the Delhi franchise in the IPL, and I've been able to maintain that passion for the team even as a broadcaster over the years." He added, "It's an exciting opportunity to step into this new role as a mentor for the Capitals, and I'm really looking forward to joining the squad, working closely with the boys, and doing everything I can to help us win that ultimate prize."
Delhi Capitals' co-owner, Mr. Kiran Kumar Grandhi, welcomed Pietersen's return, noting, "We are delighted to welcome KP as our team mentor. He has been a Delhi boy, having played for us in the IPL earlier, and it's great to have him back in a different role."
Pietersen joins a revamped coaching staff that includes Hemang Badani as Head Coach, Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket, Matthew Mott as Assistant Coach, and Munaf Patel as Bowling Coach. The franchise has yet to announce its captain for the upcoming season, following the release of Rishabh Pant after the previous season.
Beyond his playing career, Pietersen has maintained strong ties with the franchise's ownership. In 2024, he facilitated a partnership between the GMR group, co-owners of Delhi Capitals, and Hampshire County Cricket Club, highlighting his ongoing commitment to cricket development.
As the IPL 2025 season approaches, Delhi Capitals aim to secure their maiden title, building on their sole final appearance in 2020. The team's campaign is set to commence on March 24 with a match against Lucknow Super Giants, now led by former Delhi captain Rishabh Pant.
With Pietersen's mentorship and a refreshed coaching lineup, Delhi Capitals are poised for a competitive season, striving to make a significant impact in the tournament.
