Shubman Gill to captain India in Champions Trophy 2025 as injured Rohit Sharma might be rested vs New Zealand: Report

Shubman Gill may make his ODI captaincy debut in India's final Champions Trophy 2025 group-stage match against New Zealand on Sunday in Dubai. With both teams already securing semi-final spots, India is likely to rest Rohit Sharma, who injured his hamstring during the Pakistan clash. Although Rohit briefly returned to the field, he skipped batting practice on Wednesday, fueling speculation about his fitness. With India's semi-final scheduled on March 4, the team management is contemplating resting him as a precaution.

If Rohit is rested, Rishabh Pant or Washington Sundar may replace him in the XI, as India lacks a backup opener after dropping Yashasvi Jaiswal for Varun Chakaravarthy. KL Rahul could open, but that would disrupt India's settled middle order. Pant, who has opened in shorter formats, may be preferred. Meanwhile, Gill has been in top form, scoring a century against Bangladesh and 46 against Pakistan. Having captained India to a T20I series win in Zimbabwe, Gill’s leadership credentials have grown, with his ODI vice-captaincy signaling a future captaincy role.
