Gujarat Giants seem to have found a promising batting combination after their six-wicket victory over defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025. Following a string of inconsistent performances due to frequent reshuffling of their top order, GG’s batting coach Daniel Marsh hinted at a more stable lineup moving forward.
In their recent win, Beth Mooney opened the innings alongside Dayalan Hemalatha — a change from their previous game against Delhi Capitals where Harleen Deol was promoted to open and Phoebe Litchfield batted at No. 3, an experiment that did not deliver the desired results. Reflecting on the shift, Marsh said, “I think we’ve been searching for it [the right batting combination] and today’s order is something we might look at going forward. Harleen going in if we lose an early wicket and post the PowerPlay, we’ll probably send in Ash [Ashleigh Gardner].”
While both Harleen (5 off 10 balls) and Hemalatha (11 off 15 balls) couldn’t make a significant impact against RCB, Phoebe Litchfield impressed at No. 5, remaining unbeaten with a crucial 30 off 21 balls, including three boundaries and a six.
Marsh praised Litchfield’s adaptability, saying, “We think Phoebe plays really well when the field is back. She bats at No. 3 for Australia and has just started. She’s got some learning to do in that position, but we’ve placed her where we think she’ll get runs.”
While star all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner notched her third half-century of the season, opener Beth Mooney has struggled for consistency since her fifty in the tournament opener. However, Marsh remained confident about Mooney’s form. “The conditions have been quite difficult for the openers, but she’s a quality player. She looked in good touch today, just hit it straight to the fielder,” he remarked.
With a more defined batting order, Gujarat Giants are hopeful that the newfound stability will fuel their campaign as they push for a strong finish in WPL 2025.
