The highly-anticipated top-of-the-table clash in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set to unfold as Mumbai Indians (MI) take on Delhi Capitals (DC) in their reverse fixture at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday. Both teams currently occupy the top two spots in the standings, with MI sitting at the summit and DC closely trailing.
Their previous encounter almost two weeks ago was a thriller, ending with Arundhati Reddy’s last-ball sprint securing DC a nail-biting victory. This time, MI will be eager to even the score and solidify their hold on the top spot.
Both teams come into this match with momentum. MI cruised past UP Warriorz with an eight-wicket win, thanks to Nat Sciver-Brunt’s spectacular unbeaten 75 off 44 balls, a knock that also earned her the coveted Orange Cap, surpassing Ellyse Perry. Sciver-Brunt, who had earlier smashed an unbeaten 80 against DC, remains a dual threat with both bat and ball, having also taken three wickets for just 18 runs in the last game. Hayley Matthews' form adds further strength to MI’s lineup, fresh off a crucial half-century.
MI’s bowling attack has been equally impressive, with spinners Sanskriti Gupta and Amelia Kerr effectively containing opposition batters and striking at pivotal moments.
On the other hand, DC will be keen to extend their winning streak after a comfortable six-wicket triumph over Gujarat Giants. While captain Meg Lanning has hit a rough patch, falling to back-to-back deliveries that nipped back in, her teammate Jess Jonassen stepped up in style. Promoted up the order, Jonassen's blistering 32-ball 61 guided DC to victory and reinforced their batting depth.
Despite Lanning’s recent struggles, Jonassen is confident about the skipper's comeback, emphasizing that form is never a lasting concern for a player of Lanning's caliber.
With both teams showcasing firepower in all departments, this showdown promises to be another WPL classic. Fans can expect high-intensity cricket as MI seeks revenge and DC aims to tighten the title race.
