Border Battle: AP and Odisha Unite Against Crime

In a significant move to combat cross-border crime, senior police officials from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha met virtually, revealing a shared determination to eradicate illicit activities along their shared border. The meeting, led by DIG Gopinath Jatti of the Visakhapatnam range, focused on the pervasive issues of ganja cultivation and drug trafficking, which have long plagued the region.

The Visakhapatnam range police presented impressive statistics, claiming a dramatic 98% reduction in ganja cultivation in the ASR District over the past two years. This achievement is attributed to their comprehensive strategy, which includes providing farmers with alternative crops like Rajma beans and an extensive awareness campaign, 'Sankalpam', which has reached nearly a million people and engaged over 300,000 students. The campaign's success is evident in the numbers: in the past three years, police have seized over 89,000 kg of ganja, arrested 4,743 individuals, and confiscated 1,110 vehicles.

Both states acknowledged the need for enhanced cooperation and agreed to reorient their approach. This includes more frequent coordination meetings, a commitment to seamless cooperation between border officers, and a focus on financial investigations to disrupt criminal networks. The decision to hold bimonthly meetings is a bold step towards ensuring sustained attention to these critical issues.

The joint effort signifies a proactive approach to border security and crime prevention, demonstrating the power of inter-state collaboration in addressing shared challenges. With these measures, the police forces of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are sending a clear message: cross-border crime will not be tolerated, and their united front is a force to be reckoned with.
