In a stern warning to drug offenders, the SBS Nagar Special Court has handed down a severe sentence to a man found guilty of possessing a substantial quantity of psychotropic substances. Surjit Ram, a 39-year-old Rahon resident, will spend the next 15 years in rigorous imprisonment, a stark reminder of the consequences of drug-related crimes.
The case, which began with a routine police check, has now set a precedent for the strict enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. On October 14, 2019, the Rahon police, acting on information provided by ASI Karamjit Singh, intercepted Surjit Ram near the Power House. A search of his vehicle revealed a significant haul of controlled substances, including 10 boxes of Alprazolam tablets and 32 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride tablets. This discovery led to his arrest and the subsequent trial.
Justice Aparajita Joshi, presiding over the case, found Surjit Ram guilty under multiple sections of the NDPS Act, including Section 22 for possession of commercial quantities of psychotropic substances, and Sections 61 and 85 for related offenses. The court's decision sends a clear message that drug-related crimes will not be tolerated and that those found guilty will face severe penalties. The hefty fine of Rs 1.5 lakh, with an additional term of imprisonment in default, further emphasizes the gravity of the offense.
This case highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the commitment of the Indian legal system to curb the illegal trade. As the war on drugs continues, this judgment serves as a deterrent, demonstrating the potential consequences for those who engage in such activities.
