In a worrying trend, cybercriminals have swindled five Hyderabad residents out of a staggering Rs 9,94,672 in just one week. This alarming statistic highlights the growing threat of mobile fraud, with fake APK files masquerading as official apps, leaving victims with drained bank accounts.
The City Cyber Crime Unit (CCCU) has revealed that the fraudsters' modus operandi involves tricking victims into installing malicious APKs, such as RTO Challan APK and PM Kisan APK. These files, once downloaded, grant hackers control over devices, enabling them to steal OTPs and banking credentials. In one instance, a 43-year-old resident lost a substantial Rs 5,08,799, while another victim, aged 50, reported a loss of Rs 1,00,500. The fraudsters' ability to execute unauthorized transactions using stolen OTPs underscores the sophistication of their methods.
The CCCU has advised citizens to exercise caution when downloading APKs, recommending they only use official app stores. This recent spate of cyber fraud has prompted the unit to issue a stern warning, urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. With the fraudsters' tactics evolving, the public must remain alert to protect their financial assets.
ACP R.G. Siva Maruthi, in a statement to Deccan Chronicle, emphasized the importance of public awareness, stating, "Fraudsters are circulating fake APK files, disguised as official apps. Once installed, these take control of devices, steal OTPs, SMS alerts, and banking credentials, and drain accounts." This timely warning serves as a critical reminder for citizens to be cautious and proactive in safeguarding their digital security.
