In a shocking revelation, two Hyderabad residents have fallen victim to a sophisticated cybercrime, losing a staggering amount of 6.09 lakh rupees to fraudsters. The criminals employed a deceptive tactic, tricking victims into downloading a malicious mobile application named "RTO Challan.APK," which granted them unauthorized access to the users' bank accounts.
The incident highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminals, who are now using social engineering techniques to target unsuspecting individuals. The victims, aged 50 and 43, from Begum Bazar and Gaddiannaram, respectively, received messages via SMS, WhatsApp, or social media, urging them to download the fake RTO challan app. Once installed, the app provided a backdoor for criminals to access their phones remotely, leading to unauthorized debit transactions from their Central Bank of India and IndusInd Bank accounts.
The Hyderabad cyber crimes police have issued a warning, urging citizens to be vigilant against such scams. They have identified other suspicious APK files, including PM Kisan APK and Court Order RTO APK, which are being circulated through various communication channels. These files are designed to compromise personal data, such as OTPs and login credentials, allowing fraudsters to initiate unauthorized transactions.
To combat these threats, the police advise the public to exercise caution when downloading apps, recommending the use of trusted platforms like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. In the event of financial fraud, immediate action is crucial, and victims should contact the 1930 cyber helpline or report the incident through the official cybercrime website. The Cyber Crime Police also encourages citizens to stay informed about cyber safety via their social media pages and emergency contact number, ensuring residents are equipped with the knowledge to protect themselves in the digital realm.
