Hyderabad's streets may seem serene, but a different kind of crime wave has been crashing through the city's digital landscape. In a startling revelation, the Hyderabad Police have exposed a surge in cybercrimes, with a staggering 4,042 cases reported in 2024, marking a 41% increase from the previous year. This surge has prompted a strategic shift in the city's law enforcement approach, targeting the growing menace of cybercrooks.
The alarming trend primarily involves investment fraud, trading scams, OTP scams, and customs fraud, with residents losing a jaw-dropping Rs 385 crore to these online schemes. The situation is even more dire when considering the wider Hyderabad region (Cyberabad), where losses skyrocket to Rs 793 crore. The perpetrators are often repeat offenders, employing sophisticated tactics to dupe victims across the nation.
In a bold move, the state's Director-General of Police has ordered the creation of history sheets for these cybercriminals. These sheets will meticulously document the activities and movements of habitual offenders, even before a conviction, enabling the police to stay one step ahead. This proactive approach is further bolstered by new legal provisions in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, allowing for pre-conviction detention and asset attachment.
To support this initiative, Hyderabad Police have established zonal cyber investigation units and special teams, ensuring swift action against fraudsters. Public advisories are also being circulated, educating citizens about the dangers of impersonation scams and encouraging prompt reporting. With this comprehensive strategy, the police aim to deter cybercriminals, safeguard citizens, and swiftly recover lost assets, making Hyderabad a safer digital haven.
