Telangana Floods: 55 Evacuated as Heavy Rains Batter Hyderabad

As the skies unleashed a deluge over Telangana, the state found itself grappling with the impact of heavy rainfall, particularly in the bustling city of Hyderabad. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sprang into action, evacuating 55 residents from flood-prone areas near the Musi River, where water levels rose significantly. This swift response was triggered by the rising inflows into the city's twin reservoirs, Himayatsagar and Osmansagar, prompting the opening of their gates.

The downpour, which began on Friday morning, brought life to a standstill in many parts of the city. The Barkas-ESS Chandrayangutta locality recorded an impressive 61 mm of rainfall in just 12.5 hours, while Indira Nagar Community Hall in the same region received 56.8 mm. These intense showers led to widespread waterlogging, causing office commuters to navigate through challenging conditions.

The GHMC, under the vigilant eye of Commissioner R V Karnan, is maintaining a high state of alert, ensuring timely interventions to prevent any unfortunate incidents. The civic authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to exercise caution and cooperate with the administration for their safety. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has also directed all officials to be fully prepared, emphasizing the swift resolution of waterlogging and traffic issues.

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places across several districts, including Nirmal, Warangal, and Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, the state remains on high alert. The potential for thunderstorms and gusty winds adds to the urgency of the situation. As Telangana braces for more rain, the efficient management of water resources and the safety of its citizens remain paramount.
