Telangana's Public Transport Gets a Safety Boost for Women

In a significant step towards ensuring women's safety in public spaces, the Telangana Women Safety Wing (WSW) has launched a comprehensive initiative in collaboration with various transport authorities. This move aims to tackle the pervasive issue of harassment on buses, trains, and autos, offering a swift and coordinated response to victims.

The program, an extension of the safe mobility initiative, empowers women to report incidents of groping or flashing immediately. By involving bus conductors, auto drivers, and the police, the WSW has created a network of support. Victims can now discreetly alert conductors or drivers, who will then escalate the matter to the police. This streamlined process ensures a quick response, with patrol units dispatched promptly and She Teams taking charge of investigations.

This collaborative effort includes the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), Metro Rail, the transport department, Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), private bus operators, and auto drivers' associations across Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda. Each entity will designate a nodal officer to maintain seamless coordination. The WSW will oversee case progress, ensuring a transparent and efficient process. This mechanism addresses the challenges women often face when reporting harassment by strangers, as highlighted by officials: "The system strips offenders of the anonymity public spaces once afforded them."

With a focus on real-time action, the initiative integrates the Dial 100/112 service for immediate assistance. Training sessions and awareness campaigns further reinforce the commitment to women's safety, educating transport staff about their crucial role in this endeavor.
