Cyber Fraudsters' Cruel Scam Leads to Tragic Death

In a shocking incident, two cyber fraudsters have been arrested in Hyderabad, Telangana, for their role in a cruel scam that resulted in the death of a retired government employee. The prime accused, Shankar, and his accomplice, Vishwas Dattatraya Miraje, allegedly extorted a staggering 6.6 lakh from the victim, a woman, through a fake digital arrest.

The fraudsters' scheme began with a series of WhatsApp calls, where they impersonated Bengaluru police officials and accused the victim of involvement in a human trafficking case. They provided forged documents bearing the names of reputable institutions like the Supreme Court, Enforcement Directorate, and RBI, adding a layer of authenticity to their deception. Under immense pressure, the victim transferred a substantial sum from her pension account.

Tragically, the psychological distress caused by the relentless intimidation continued even after the money was transferred, ultimately leading to her death from a cardiac arrest on September 8. The accused's audacity knew no bounds, as they continued to demand more money even after the victim's passing. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals and the devastating impact they can have on vulnerable individuals.

Cyberabad police have taken swift action by booking the accused under the BNS, marking the first case since DGP Dr. Jitender's recent instructions. The investigation, led by ACP R.G. Siva Maruthi, has revealed that the accused are also involved in similar cases in Telangana and Gujarat. The victim's son, who lodged the complaint, is now awaiting justice as the police continue their efforts to combat cybercrime and protect citizens from such heinous acts.
